Buiochas Sr. Maureen!

sr-maureen-haughOn the weekend of 30th July, we bade farewell and say thanks to Sr. Maureen Haugh, a member of the Sisters of Mercy Community here in Shannon for the past 31 years. Sr. Maureen is leaving Shannon and will take up residence in the Mercy Community in St. Xavier’s Convent in Ennis.
Sr. Maureen, a native of Doonbeg, joined the staff of St. Caimin’s Community School where she taught English and Religion until her retirement from teaching in the year 2000. The next stage of her ministry saw her appointed by Bishop Willie Walsh as the Diocesan Delegate for Immigration & Refugees. In this ministry, Sr. Maureen excelled herself as the face of the Catholic Church in reaching out and welcoming many people from different nationalities and faith traditions who came to live among us. She worked closely with other agencies in helping so many people who found themselves making Ireland their new home. Sr. Maureen worked closely with Chaplains from different Countries in developing their faith traditions into our lives.
An example would be the blessing of Polish food on Holy Saturday, which is now the best attended ceremony of Holy Week and the Mass of All Nations in January, in which Parishioners from so many Countries living in our Parish participate. The ministry of Sr. Maureen to the new Irish, especially in times of sickness and death, is only known and appreciated by those people who benefitted from her presence with them in their hour of need.
Sr. Maureen was a great help to Priests in the Diocese in their Ministry and understanding of different faith traditions that are now part of every Parish community. She was also part of a team that helped people to pray and, as a Prayer Guide, she spent many hours with individuals guiding them in prayer. In Sr. Maureen’s ministry among us, we saw the true face of the Venerable Mother Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, who reached out to the poor and those in need.
We wish Sr. Maureen every blessing in her new Mercy Community in Ennis and thank her for the tremendous contribution she has made to our Parish.
