A Christmas Message for Our Golden Jubilee Year

the-parish-teamFor the past 50 years we have gathered here each Christmas and we do so this year as we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of our Parish. It was at Christmas Mass in 1967 that people gathered in the newly established Shannon Parish, separate and independent from the Parish of Newmarket-on-Fergus for the first time.

As we gather this year we look back over the past 50 years, looking at the progress that has taken place; from the building of our churches and schools, to building the Kingdom of God as citizens both of this earth and the eternal life.

It is a great opportunity to acknowledge the goodness and generosity of our parishioners and the kindness, support, and encouragement given and gratefully received over the years, and in a particular way to be able to say thanks to all who helped in a special way with the Liturgical life of the Parish; to readers, altar servers, and Eucharistic Ministers.

We acknowledge the work of the Pastoral Council. We thank Jimmy Morris who retired as Chairman during the year and wish his successor, Joe Kelly, every blessing in his leadership role. To our Finance Committee, parish representatives who distribute envelopes and literature on behalf of the parish, our basket collectors and counters, the organisers and participants of Eucharistic Adoration, and those who care for our children during the Children’s Liturgy, we offer our sincere gratitude.

We are conscious of the great contribution our teachers and school staff, both past and present, have made over the past 50 years and continue to make by handing on the gift of faith to our young people. We thank all who serve on Boards of Management of our schools. A special thank you to our Sacristans Mary, Michelle and their families, to our choirs, and all involved in music ministry in our parish. Thanks to Teresa in the Parish Office, to Theresa Campbell who keeps our Parish up to date on social media and the parish website, to Jo our housekeeper, caretakers, those who clean our churches, to the Sisters of Mercy and to the many people who volunteer to help make our Parish an alive and welcoming community.

This year we welcome Fr. Francis Xavier to our Parish. Fr. Francis Xavier is one of two priests from India who have come to work in the Diocese of Killaloe. We hope and pray that his time with us will be enriching and fulfilling for both him and our parish community.

May the celebration of Christmas in this Golden Jubilee year of our Parish renew our sense of peace at the deepest level and give us a trust in the God who promises to be with us always. May 2018 and the expected visit of Pope Francis to our country for the World Meeting of Families bring us all many blessings.

May the Lord give you peace.
