Installation of Stained Glass Window Dedicated to Saint John Paul

img_0743During the Golden Jubilee celebrations of St. Senan’s Parish Shannon in 2017, a stained glass window of St. John Paul was commissioned for SS John & Paul Church to commemorate his visit to Shannon on 1st October 1979.

While on his pastoral visit to Ireland Pope John Paul II blessed the foundation stone of SS John & Paul Church which was blessed and dedicated the following year 1980.

The commission of this stained glass was based on an original photograph captured by local parishioner Padraig O’Reilly from Fergus Drive, of Pope John Paul II leaving Shannon Airport on 1st October 1979. Sadly Padraig died in October last before this work was completed.

The work was carried out by Art Glass who are located in Derry City. The window was installed in preparation for its dedication next Tuesday 17th April by Bishop Fintan when he visits the parish to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation.

We acknowledge the support we have received from the staff of Art Glass Ireland, Christy Collins who painted the frame of the window, The O’Reilly family who gave us permission to use the photograph and the many people who have made donations and contributions to date towards the cost involved.
